I always enjoy hearing something a little different to the usual and Qattuu's Panikuluuk is the first time I have had the chance to recommend a recording featuring a throat-singer.
'Panikuluuk' means “little daughter” in Inuktitut (one of the principal Inuit languages of Canada) and is an emotional expression of the experience of motherhood. Apart from the throat-singing and more traditional vocals/instrumentation, the piece features the ultrasound of a mother's heartbeat along with audio clips of Qattuu’s daughter. The combination of elements create a track which is both unusual and touching. If throat-singing is a new concept to you, then Qattuu's Panikuluuk is certainly a good starting point to educate yourself.
