MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: CATBEAR - I Choose Love

I Choose Love is a silky smooth and sparkling electro pop single by the duo CATBEAR. Joyful and uplifting, a perfect song to banish the blues.

CATBEAR is a synth-heavy, indie alt pop project formed of Zoe Konez and Sarah Smith - best friends who started out writing songs out of the conversations best friends have. Transforming their deep life-chats into vibrant, upbeat songs as they process growing older (and becoming a bit too tired to go out on a weeknight).

CATBEAR leapt into existence in its current form in 2018 with the release of Beast Of The Night - an irreverent take on nightlife culture in your late 20s. Over the course of the next 3 years they have released 7 more singles all self-produced in their home studio. 2023 sees CATBEAR play live shows for the first time on a UK tour as they launch their empowering

Based from Zoe’s home studio in South London, UK, they write, record and produce all their music themselves. Sarah on drums and backing vocals, Zoe on lead vocals, synths, guitars and any other sounds that end up on the songs.

Unapologetically female and queer, they are proud to represent the 2% of female producers that are currently working in music, and are committed to showcasing and championing women in all areas of the music industry. Their touring party is all-female/non-binary, something which is really important to them, and they are committed to giving opportunities to collaborate and work with people who are in minority groups wherever possible.

Zoe has seen first hand the unacceptably low numbers of women producers having taught on a music production degree course where just a handful each term would be women or non-binary students. Having started CATBEAR initially to be a place for two women to come together in a safe space and have fun musically, Zoe and Sarah love encouraging the visibility of amazing women musicians. They’ve built up a playlist on Spotify which showcases women and non-binary musicians who are releasing songs in a similar genre, which now boasts over 13.5k followers.

Quote from Zoe:

“Billy Lunn from the Subways has been one of our biggest champions from the start of our CATBEAR years and has been asking us to play with him for a while now, but up until this year we just couldn’t make it work. Now with the backing of these amazing funds we are able to put on an exciting show and we can’t wait to hear what people think. It really does make all the difference having someone in your corner and we can’t thank Billy enough for all of his support and endorsement.”
