This perked me up today, some no messing, full-on, Riot Grrrl action from South Yorkshire in the form of Skint Knees with Boys Like You. It starts with a bit of background, conversational swearing (setting the scene type of stuff), then launches into a blaze of guitars, drums and machine-gun vocals. Checks out before the 2-minute mark, leaving you feeling a bit breathless. Absolutely spiffing stuff.
Skint Knees are a 4-piece punk band from Sheffield (that explains their steely determination and cutting-edge sound), they are "eager to get their name out there and create a thriving scene to inspire and influence a new generation of loud mouths". The band say that the song is about being "angry at how we've been treated in the music scene and throughout our lives predominantly by males. Written by our guitarist, Bella, we want to encourage people just like us to not be defeated and to do what they want and not be put down by a few people who may belittle them on the way."
I fully endorse the sentiment of the song and even, after all these years, wonder why such gender inequality exists - so glad to let Skint Knees sock it to them!
