Let me tell you about Lexie Carroll's new single Annual Birthday Cry. I was initially attracted by the intriguing title on this one, that and the headstones on the artwork (the goth in me haha). My casual interest turned into something more focused as soon as the track started and Lexie's brittle vocal arrived, deftly accompanied by the extremely minimal backing. The whole track is tremendously fragile and is lyrically very touching, the "I don’t wanna watch my mum getting older" line must surely hit a nerve with most people?
Speaking about the track Lexie says "I wrote ‘annual birthday cry’ just after I turned seventeen. I was feeling overwhelmed with growing up in a world that feels so dark and unsafe. I guess I've always just thought ‘oh when I'm older I'll have this figured out’ and then each year goes by and I still have absolutely no clue how to be a human being! The song is a brain dump of all of my fears, and it's not the happiest thing I've made but I think I just needed to get it all out."
In addition to her songwriting, Lexie creates her artwork and many of her videos. Even more impressive is the fact that Lexie is still only in her teens. On this evidence, she is certainly one to watch....and you can start here with the video.
